This lessons will let you make your own Designer Edges. I think they are alot like
those maskes in PSP, so the ideas are endless. But this is the basic way to make them.
First you should download this file
MIX BASIC BLUE FOR 2000-2001
PNG BASIC BLUE FOR 2002-DIP
This lesson was made in Digital Image Pro, but you will find the directions for the
other verisons also. Every version except maybe express, can make these.
The file I told you to download is a zip file of the basic file you need to make
your own edges. It is the right shade of blue that you need your edge filter to be,
I took the curl edge filter and just made a rectangle of the same color. In your Designers
file in Picture It some of the edges are just corners, but this didn't work for me,
so I just make sure that it was the same size as the page curl, which is a pretty large
file, but it will do well with large pictures, Im sure for those of you who are very
creative you can play around and come up with other ways to make these. I have made
edges out of mono frames, colored frames and corners. I did find that you can actually
use freehand paint and use different layers of the same color blue paint as the basic
file and come up with edges that are softer! So I am guessing that you can probably make
stamps or shapes of this color blue, and put them around a large area to make your own
homemade edges!
Edges work the same as an x-ray, you need to think of the blue part you want
to keep and the white will be gone.
So you now download the zip, open it and save it to your file to your My Pictures folder.
I have found that while making
edges, you will need to make and play with each one, this means using your folder for
your designer edges...alot, so I just went and made a shortcut to this folder on my desktop,
saves going through all the files to put and take out edges.
You find an edge you want to make. Here is a simple tree you can download and follow
along with me. Big edges like this is actually very easy.
All you actually need to do is cutout the tree and turn it the blue color as the basic
file is. To do this in DIP you will...
Open your tree.
Open your basic file.
Select your tree file, which is green and white.
Go to the top and click FORMAT/CREATE A CUTOUT/BY COLOR SELECTION.

With your cursor that will turn into an eyedropper, click in the white area (the tree).
Your tree should turn pinkish.
Click next.
When you do, the outline of your tree, the green part will become washed out, that means
that this is the part you are cutting out.
Click on IN A SEPARATE PROJECT,

this will make it easier for you, and instead of
placing your cutout ontop of the orginal and confusing your, it will make it into
it's own window.
Click Done.
Your new window, will look white and empty, but acutally has the white tree in it.
Go to the bottom of your screen and drag your blue basic file up, onto your white tree
window.
Click on your white tree area, just to unselect the basic blue.
Now fill your tree with the basic blue by going to the top and clicking EFFECTS/
FILL WITH TEXTURE OR COLOR.

Click on More solid color choices.

Now click on your basic blue with the eyedropper.

Your tree will fill with the color.
Click done and delete the basic blue file from your tree, by right clicking on the
it to your right, choose Delete.
Now you have your edge!
You will need to save it
in png format and name it something by going to the top and clicking
FILE/SAVE AS.
You now need to place your new edge in your designers folder and try it out on a picture. If when making your edges, you try them out each time you can choose to delete a messed up one and try again, so you don't clutter your designer folder with unwanted edges.
Here is my new edge in use...
